Recruiting & Training cont...
Job Fair: To an employer, and a job seeker, a job fair is like shopping in a mall. All the stores are located in one centralized location, allowing you to visit the place that peaks your interest and has what you are looking for. Your city or town should have job fairs on a consistent basis, take the time to check your local listings and set up a booth to meet your perspective clients face to face and conduct on the spot interviews if necessary.

Training: Now that you have successfully landed the perfect candidate(s), you need to make sure they are properly trained on the specific job functions to ensure they are successful, and most important, they will help your company prosper and grow. Please consider the following:
  • Supply new employees with reading material. The most critical part of employee training and development is retention of learned material. A new and existing staff member has a great deal to absorb. The ability to refer back to printed information can help the process. Even if you don't have a company manual, custom-made worksheets outlining procedures and expectations can be beneficial.
  • Walk through procedures with your team. Explain each step thoroughly and encourage questions. When the new recruit is ready, have them perform the tasks while you shadow them. Correct mistakes in a constructive manner; it takes time to learn a new set of procedures.
  • Explain the reasoning behind step-by-step procedures. New employees pick up procedures faster when they understand the rationale behind them.
  • Assign a mentor. The "sink or swim" approach rarely works among employee training techniques. Assigning a guide to ease the transition to independent work helps the new employee acclimate to the position while freeing your time for other duties
  • Give credit where it's due. As your new employee masters a job skill, praise their efforts. A feeling of appreciation can go a long way in employee training and development.
