Moving Your Business
Moving a business can be overwhelming, time consuming, and expensive. Planning is the key to a success business move. It’s impossible to plan too far in advance. Here are steps to help prepare you for the move.
  • Select the location. Be sure to research the area to ensure there is a market for your products and services. Also be sure to check out the competition.
  • Create a check list of everything that needs to be done, and constantly review during the move.
  • Determine licensing and registration requirements for the new location. This will require research, unless you utilize professional services to do the leg work for you.
  • Identify unneeded office equipment and donate it. Remember you’ll get a tax credit for donating to a charity.
  • Hire a moving company. Call a few months in advance, get price quotes, and ask about proof of insurance.
  • Clearly mark boxes, using a numbering system. It’s also helpful to include a brief description plus place marking on top and sides of boxes.
  • Remove and pack all computer cables at one time. Place them in large baggies with indicators as to which computer they belong. Removing cables minimizes the possibility of damaging, bending, and/or losing them.
  • Wrap computer monitors individually. For protection it’s best to use thick blankets, bubble wrap, and tape. Don’t place computers atop of each other and use removable hard drives to backup all data prior to the move.
  • Remove printer cartridges, tape down covers and scanner lids. Also follow any specific instructions for relocating fax machines, copiers, and printers since improper moving may cause damage and void warranties.
  • Obtain insurance coverage to protect company property.
  • Update all company contact information on website, business cards, stationary, and marketing material.
  • Notify vendors, creditors, banks, post office, and clients. Be sure to provide new billing information for customers. It’s a good idea to make a list of all business contacts and advertising locations, so you do not neglect something critical.
  • Review your check list to ensure nothing was forgotten.
  • Create a back-up plan.
