Driven – Being a self-motivator is necessary of leaders. Not only do leaders inspire others, they must also maintain a desire to achieve greatness. Leaders push themselves and usually don’t have to be asked to put in extra hours. Because they have a vision, they don’t mind doing what it takes to bring it to fruition. They are also often harder on themselves than anyone else.

Risk Takers – Leaders don’t mind taking risks. They recognize the possibility of failure, but understand in many cases it can be a step towards success. Leaders don’t mind stepping outside of comfort zones. Even with a plan there’s no guarantee of success, but leaders are willing to “step out on faith” in order to reach their goals.

Accountability – Although there are others responsible for physically executing various aspects of the plan, leaders take accountability for the ultimately outcome. In assuming responsibility, leaders require status updates and high-level details to ensure goals are met. They track and assess results and encourage team players to continue moving forward. If necessary they have to redirect the team if working out of scope.

Delegate – Everyone needs assistance at some point. Effective leaders realize they can’t do everything by themselves and aren’t afraid to involve others to accomplish goals. Sharing the load allows the leader to focus on overseeing all aspects of the business as opposed to getting bogged down in the muck of the things.

Take a look at yourself and/or those in leadership roles in your organization, and then take necessary steps to ensure that there are good leaders running your business.
